Why You Should Size Up in Black Jeans (When You're Between Sizes)

The short answer: Yes — black jeans often feel firmer than lighter washes in the same size. At FITJEANS, black fabric is always stiffer, so if you are between sizes, size up in black. The lighter the wash, the softer the fabric tends to feel, so size down in the lightest washes. Pastel is different: use that style's size guide or email help@fitjeans.com rather than guessing from blue or black advice.

You measured carefully. You bought your usual size. The blue pair is perfect… and the black pair feels like a different brand. You are not imagining it.

Wash and dye change how denim feels on day one. Here is how we tell customers in our 450,000+ community to navigate black vs light washes — without inventing a new size for every colour.

Why do black jeans feel tighter?

Black denim is typically dyed and finished in a way that leaves the fabric stiffer when new. Stiffer fabric has less easy give in the first wears, so the same waist measurement can feel firmer in black than in a soft light wash.

That does not mean black jeans are "sized smaller" on the tag. It means when you sit on the border between two sizes, black is the colour where going up one size usually feels better.

The FITJEANS between-sizes rule

Situation What to do
Clearly in one size on the chart Take that size
Between two sizes, black wash Size up
Between two sizes, lightest washes Size down
Pastel colours Do not guess — check the Pastel size guide or email help@fitjeans.com
Low waisted styles Size by hip first; then apply the same black / light preference if you are on the border

Real support example we use in sizing chats: a waist right between M and L on Flared is often an M in blue and a size up in black.

Does this apply to every black FITJEANS style?

Use it whenever you are between sizes in:

  • Flared and Flared Mid (including Heavy Washed Black — each pair can look slightly unique from the wash process, but the stiffness tip still applies for sizing)
  • Baggy and Baggy Low
  • Contour, Contour Mid and 360
  • Capri
  • Bare and Raw Waist (after you have the right hip size)

Always start from the correct chart for the style. Baggy letters are not identical to Flared / Skinny letters. Black does not replace measuring — it only breaks the tie.

What about grey, rinse and vintage washes?

Think on a soft-to-stiff spectrum rather than a rigid rule for every name:

  • Black / heavier darks: more likely to feel firm → bias to sizing up on the border
  • Mid blues / vintage: usually true to the chart
  • Lightest washes: softer hand feel → bias to sizing down on the border
  • Pastel: its own lane — chart or help@fitjeans.com

If you already own a FITJEANS blue in a perfect size, treat black as "same size unless you were already stretching the waistband on day one."

Will black jeans stretch out?

Stretch denim softens with wear, but you should still be able to fasten them and sit down on day one. Do not buy a painful size hoping it will "give." Our waistbands are meant to feel a little snug; they are not meant to cut you in half.

To keep black jeans fitting longer:

  • Wash cold, inside out (max 30°C / 86°F)
  • Skip fabric softener and bleach
  • Air dry — heat is rough on stretch and can fade black unevenly
  • Wash less often; spot clean when you can

Black jeans outfit notes (since you are here)

Black flares and black baggy are the closest thing denim has to a uniform. Pair black Flared with a white tee and boots for sharp everyday. Pair black Baggy with a fitted top so the waist still shows. Black Contour or 360 under a blazer is the sleek option.

Our Straight Leg style is discontinued — for a clean dark jean, choose Flared, Baggy, Contour or 360 in black instead.

FAQ

Should I always size up in black jeans?

Only when you are between sizes. If your waist sits firmly in one size on the chart, start there.

Why is my black pair tighter than my blue pair in the same size?

Black fabric is stiffer, especially when new. The pattern size matches; the hand feel does not.

Do Heavy Washed Black jeans size the same way?

Yes for the between-sizes tip. Heavy Washed Black can vary slightly in look from pair to pair because of the wash process.

What if I want a soft light wash and I am between sizes?

Size down. Lightest washes tend to feel softer.

What about Pastel Black or pastel tones?

Pastel sizing is different from standard blue/black advice. Use the Pastel guide or ask help@fitjeans.com.

Can your team help me choose between two sizes?

Yes. Email your waist (or hip for low styles), inseam and the colour you want to help@fitjeans.com — personal sizing help is something we do a lot.
